My journey as a residential advisor

Living at The Lofts  over the past year has been an incredible experience, but stepping into the role of Residential Advisor (RA) has elevated my student-life experience beyond what I could have imagined.

As an international student who didn't initially know anyone in Melbourne, I decided to apply to be an RA because I sought a deeper connection with my residential community. The experience has delivered just that. Not only have I developed strong relationships with my RA team, but I have also connected with many residents I might not have otherwise met.

The Lofts provides an exceptional environment for meeting and connecting with other graduate students. As an RA, I collaborate with my team to organise and host a variety of exciting events as part of the Residential Life Program for our residents each month. These activities range from enjoying Australian barbecues on the rooftop, bouldering, exploring the city with the best coffee in hand, to even practicing our English-speaking skills in small group sessions.

The highlight of my week as an RA is leading the weekly yoga classes. I love seeing the familiar faces of returning residents and catching up on the week's events before classes begins. This position has allowed me to not only practice something I really enjoy but also share it with others, building connections on and off the mat.

However, the position goes far beyond social engagement. It also challenges me to step out of my comfort zone and develop essential skills such as public speaking, planning, teamwork, and communication. Surprisingly, I have also discovered new skills and passions I did not know I previously had. As a bonus, my RA experience has also proven valuable in my applications for other career opportunities.

I'm excited about the rest of my time at The Lofts, where I find joy in creating a positive and welcoming environment for my fellow students.
