Melbourne Connect is a HEPPP funded program offered to select schools in metropolitan Melbourne. The program provides engagement opportunities designed to inspire your students to pursue tertiary education. Current University of Melbourne students from your local area are chosen to act as ambassadors, providing an example of success and a friendly face for the transition to university.

How are schools selected?

The selection criteria aims to include schools with a high number of low-SES student enrolments (based on ICSEA), who are underrepresented at the University of Melbourne and/or have had a high number of students applying to the University via the Access Melbourne scheme.

What are the benefits for my students?

We offer you exclusive opportunities to engage with the University of Melbourne, preferential access to bursaries for your students to attend our UMSU VCE Summer School, VCE Expo tickets and other benefits. Activities are focussed on empowering students with valuable insights into the transition from high school to University life.

Program Events

Melbourne Connect Ambassador school visit

A 1st or 2nd year University of Melbourne student from your local area, will visit your school and give a presentation suitable for Year 10, 11 and 12. They will explain what a typical day at University involves, how they made friends, time management tips and services on campus. Focused on the transition from high school to university, the presentation does not contain course or application specific information. The visit can be organised to take place in your classroom, an assembly, during lunchtime or after school.

On-campus Discover Melbourne events

Each year, we hold two on-campus days exclusively for Melbourne Connect schools towards the end of term 2. These events are specifically designed for Year 10 students, providing one hands-on workshop focussed on STEM and another on HASS (Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) activities. We advocate selecting students interested in these areas for each event. These sessions include exceptional access to campus spaces, labs and academic staff. Please ensure that you reserve your school's place quickly to ensure that you don't miss out.

Students are able to ask any questions about uni life in a relaxed peer-to-peer environment. Other avenues can seem a bit daunting or inaccessible, but these visits give students the opportunity to easily seek out information that leaves them reassured and confident about their future university prospects.

As a high school student with no idea about what to expect from the transition to university, attending a Melbourne Connect presentation provided plenty of valuable insights. We were able to directly ask the ambassador who had been through a similar experience, questions about the differences between high school and university.
