At Melbourne Uni Cheer and Dance, we’re passionate about team spirit, making lasting friendships, and making the most out of our university experience. We began in 2012 and have grown into a family of over 100 athletes in 2020. Although we started with just one Cheerleading team, we have gradually expanded into numerous dance styles and now boast Cheerleading, Pom, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Lyrical teams. We are completely student-run and elect volunteers to run as our managing Committee every year.
Our teams train every week during semester and every training is based on increasing our team fitness, cheerleading or dance skills, and learning choreography. The routines we learn are performed at competitions across the year where we get to show off our skills and bond with students from other universities (and grab those important Insta memories!). Often our competitions are interstate (Nationals 2020 is in the Gold Coast) and our athletes love travelling to new places and competing against new teams. In 2018, one of our advanced Pom teams even travelled to Florida to compete in the World Cheerleading Championships, where they were ranked 9th in the world.
Over the years, the biggest and best aspect of MUCD has always been the friendships formed within our teams and over the whole club. Our athletes consider the friends they meet as one of the most important parts of their time with MUCD. Not only do we have a blast in training, but throughout the year we organise and host fundraising BBQ’s, a joint formal Ball with the RMIT Cheerleading Club, and competition after-parties where we celebrate the achievements we’ve made.
Since restrictions were put in place, we’ve transitioned to training in classes over Zoom, which sounds a little difficult but which has so far been a success! Although we can’t practise together in person, we can stretch, keep fit, learn choreography and improve our skills together online. Our wonderful coaches have adapted amazingly to this new platform and have been busy thinking up heaps of ways to challenge athletes at home and keep them on their feet. Similarly, both our new and returning athletes have embraced the change and have loved the continued exercise and social engagement getting them through self-isolation. In addition to the class, our teams have organised zoom hangouts and movie sessions, even video challenges to get to know each other and keep the quarantine blues away.
Hopefully, we’ll be able to return to in-person training and competitions soon, but even though we are currently online, we’re always looking for new members to join our club! We accept all athletes no matter what your level of experience is, so don’t worry if you feel a little out of your depth. If you’d like to join the MUCD family, feel free to reach out to us by email at email@example.com, like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. You can also find us on our website, Melbourne University Cheer and Dance which has more info and videos of our routines for you to see if you’d like a better idea of what we offer in our classes. We hope everyone is staying safe during these times and we hope to meet some new faces soon!
