Overseas intensive subjects
Overseas intensive subjects offer you the opportunity to complete a Language subject overseas in a condensed amount of time. Subjects typically run from one to four weeks.
English Language Studies is concerned with the English Language in all its aspects including its structure, its diversity, how it changes and evolves, and how people learn and make use of it to communicate in a range of social situations and communication modes.
Deepen your understanding of the English language
There are 400 million native speakers of English in the world, and over a billion who speak it as a secondary language. It’s the official language of 67 countries and is spoken on every continent. You speak English every single day – but do you really know anything about it?
When you study English Language, you’ll develop an understanding of its subtle and intricate grammar and learn about its many social and geographic varieties. You can choose from subjects in Grammar, Syntax and Phonetics – but you can also learn about Intercultural Communication, where you’ll analyse the ways in which communicative approaches differ across cultures. You can examine how social and cultural factors influence language and how language constructs identity.
If English isn’t your first language, you can even take subjects to help you refine your academic English skills.
Where can English language studies take you?
English Language Studies will help you develop a deep understanding of how to communicate effectively. You could apply these skills in careers such as marketing or corporate communications, where you’ll possess the knowledge and skills to liaise with both your clients and your audiences. However, the clear communication skills you’ll develop in this minor are invaluable in any field. Combined with your major studies, English Language Studies will help you to succeed in whatever career path you choose.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language subjects help students to study effectively at university by developing their academic English skills. Subjects are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In these subjects, students will produce research-based written and oral assignments using a range of source materials. You’ll learn to communicate ideas clearly and fluently using appropriate academic language.
