Career outcomes

Overview

Graduates will be able to use the confidence and skills gained during this course to provide their patients with an advanced level of evidence-based care. Additionally, graduates can increase their current scope of practice by choosing an elective in immunisation or cervical screening.

This course also provides opportunities for further study and meets the qualification entry requirement for the Master of Advanced Nursing Practice programs at the University of Melbourne, which include the nurse practitioner program and the dual degree Master of Advanced Nursing Practice/Master of Public Health.

Opportunities

Students completing the Nurse Immuniser elective are able to immediately work as nurse immunisers in all states (subject to local regulation). The optional clinical placement component provides graduates with a considerable advantage when it comes to finding employment, especially in local government or a GP clinic.

Students completing the Clinical and Sexual Reproductive Health elective can choose to complete an additional clinical practicum to become Nurse Cervical Screening Providers.

Further study

Students may progress to the Master of Advanced Nursing Practice or the dual Master of Advanced Nursing Practice/Master of Public Health. These higher degrees offer a coursework or research pathway.

Nurse Practitioner Program

The Graduate Certificate in Primary Care Nursing forms part of the entry requirements to the nurse practitioner program. Dr Dianne Crellin explains the program below.
