Admission criteria
To be considered for entry into this course, you must:
- Have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with a strong analytical or mathematical component with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 75% (or equivalent), AND
- Have completed the Graduate Records Examination (GRE), unless you have completed an undergraduate degree in Australia or New Zealand or met one of the approved conditions for GRE exemption, AND
- Submit a 500 word personal statement outlining why you wish to be considered for this course.
Please note: If you have an economics background, you will normally be required to have a major in economics including calculus-based economics subjects plus an econometrics subject with a weighted average mark of at least 75% across the major to meet the analytical or mathematical prerequisite requirements.
If you do not have an economics background, you will require an undergraduate major of a mathematical/analytical nature including calculus, linear algebra, and statistics subjects with a weighted average mark of at least 75% and will also be required to have completed microeconomics and macroeconomics subjects at least at the second-year level.

About selection
When assessing applications, the Selection Committee will consider your previous studies and academic performance.
The Selection Committee may request additional information to clarify any aspect of an application, according to the University’s Academic Board rules regarding selection instruments.
Meeting the published entry requirements for this course does not guarantee selection.
The Selection Committee will consider your GRE score (if relevant) and your personal statement.
Additional information
If you discontinue from the Master of Economics but have successfully completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Economics, you will be eligible to receive the Graduate Diploma in Economics as an exit award.
Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM)
We encourage domestic students to explore eligibility for Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM). GAM offers an opportunity for admission to this course even if your tertiary marks are below the standard entry requirements. GAM applicants may also be considered for financial bursaries and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) where available.
GAM categories include coming from a rural area, being an Indigenous Australian, experiencing financial hardship or personal difficulties, having refugee status, or living with a disability or medical condition. In assessing applications, we look to balance opportunity and your capacity to succeed.
Advanced Standing
If you have an honours degree in economics with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 75%, or a relevant postgraduate degree with a WAM of at least 75% and have completed subjects which satisfy the prerequisites for second year subjects in the Master of Economics, you may be awarded up to 100 points of credit into this course.
