    What will I study?


    Knowledge and Skills you'll gain

    Subjects require attendance at up to two study days and up to two webinars each semester.
    Gain expertise in surgical knowledge, skills and practice knowledge.

    Surgical knowledge:

    Develop the fundamental principles of surgery drawing on biomedical and clinical sciences. Learn to describe a range of surgical presentations representing examples of trauma, sepsis, hemorrhage, malignancy and tissue ischemia and luminal obstruction. You’ll also gain knowledge on the fundamentals of wound healing and care.

    Surgical skills:

    Learn a range of basic surgical skills, including: handling instruments, incisions, handling tissue, local anaesthetic techniques and tying sutures etc.

    Surgical practice knowledge:

    While developing a level of professionalism in surgical practice, gain knowledge of core approaches to surgery – open, endoscopic/endoluminal and laparoscopic/natural orifice – and their general indications. Learn how to apply basic biomedical science knowledge to clinical surgical scenarios. Develop knowledge in the application and interpretation of imaging techniques. And, learn to describe features of contemporary surgical practice from a socio-politico-economic perspective.

    Research knowledge and skills

    Gain a particular interest in surgery and develop the skills to implement and write up surgical research project through appraisal of literature relevant to surgical research project. And then through this, learn to evaluate research data in light of what is known on your topic. Furthermore, learn to evaluate ethical issues, challenges and manage all phases of your research.

    Degree Structure

    The Master of Surgical Science is the highest level award (150-points) with exit points at Graduate Diploma in Surgical Science (100-points) and Graduate Certificate in Surgical Science (50-points). Students must obtain 70% or more in their subject scores at Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma to progress to the Master of Surgical Science.
