      The Specialist Certificate in Blood Management Foundations underpins the Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice and the beginning of your blood management professional journey.

      The course provides foundational education for healthcare professionals (including nurses, midwives, laboratory scientists and medical officers) who work in the area of blood management/transfusion of blood and blood products.

      You will explore foundational concepts in areas related to blood management, including governance, change management, incident and risk management, physiology of blood, haemostasis and anaemia. You will also advance your knowledge of blood and blood products, laboratory process and consumer participation to support quality and safety work in blood management.

      Assessments are practical and industry-relevant, ensuring you gain the specific skills and knowledge to support your professional practice in blood management, quality and safety.

      Delivered online and designed to be undertaken part time over 12 weeks, this course is a pathway into the Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice, which is endorsed by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Academy and designed to advance your knowledge and skills in the specialist areas of blood management and transfusion practice.

      Who is this course for

      This course is suited to healthcare professionals including nurses, midwives, and scientists currently working in or associated with the field of blood management/transfusion or working towards this. Staff responsible for managing organisational compliance with Australian National Safety and Quality Healthcare Standards, Blood Management Standard (7) and associated activities, or working towards this, should also apply. It is advantageous to be supported by your employing healthcare/laboratory service when undertaking this course.

      Course aims

      This course is delivered in partnership with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria under the auspices of the Blood Matters program.

      Blood Matters aims to support and enhance best practice in blood management, which includes patient blood management (PBM), the stewardship of blood and blood products and transfusion practice, for improved patient outcomes in Victorian health services.
