Major

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

    What will I study?

    Overview

Gain skills in survey, experimentation and modelling of ecological and evolutionary processes, and discover how evolutionary ecology can be applied to solve current problems in evolution, ecology and biodiversity.

Develop knowledge from a range of disciplines: from genetics through organismal biology, to ecosystem science. You’ll also develop experience preparing them for the workplace by participating in group research projects and working groups.

    Your major structure

This major can be completed through the Bachelor of Science.

In your first and second year you will complete subjects that are prerequisites for your major as well as other science core, science elective and breadth studies.

In your third year, you will complete 50 points (usually four subjects) of study that is deep and specialised study in ecology and evolutionary biology and you can also complete breadth studies. This major is made up of core and core selective subjects.

    Breadth studies

Breadth is a unique feature of the Melbourne Model. It gives you the chance to explore subjects outside of science, developing new perspectives and learning to collaborate with others who have different strengths and interests — just as you will in your future career.

Some of our students use breadth to explore creative interests or topics they have always been curious about. Others used breadth to improve their career prospects by complementing their major with a language, communication skills or business expertise.
