You’ll leave this major with an understanding of the determinants of health in populations of domestic and production animals and in particular the impact of welfare, housing, nutrition and infectious agents on domestic animal health. This major will integrate knowledge from a range of disciplines including veterinary anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology and pathology as they apply to the health of domestic and production animals.

Your major structure

You’ll complete this major as part of a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to the below, you’ll also take elective science subjects and breadth (non-science) subjects throughout your degree.

In your first and second years, you’ll complete the subjects that are prerequisites for your major including chemistry, biology and animal health subjects. In second year, you’ll also have the option to take elective subjects in nutrition and animal physiology.

In your third year, as a base, you’ll complete four subjects (50 points of study), however four additional Level 3 subjects (an additional 50 points of study) are required for students who have received a provisional/conditional offer for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and want to receive one full year of credit toward this degree. Students in this major will be provided with a sequential capstone experience and through three of the core major subjects students will be introduced to aspects of professional practice, acquire safe animal handling skills and complete a one-week extramural placement activity.
