Jazz & Improvisation student James Vincent shares his experience of recording his final year assessment piece, involving musicians from across the Faculty, and working with production staff in the Faculty’s Brian Brown studio. Jazz & Improvisation in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music embraces a studio intensive pedagogy where students learn performance and composition skills within individual and ensemble performance contexts.
As part of a small cohort, students benefit from the mentoring role our expert Jazz & Improvisation music staff facilitate. Staff and students work closely in teaching and performance contexts, which enables our staff to support each individual student’s performance and/or composition ambitions.
Our students focus on ensemble and individual studio-based practice. Students perform regularly for public audiences from their first year, honing their performance skills, and masterclasses with visiting world-class musicians enliven the culture of the Faculty and broaden our students’ musical experience.
