Graduate degree pathway

How to become an architect

3 years Bachelors degree
2 years Master of Architecture

1. Choose an undergraduate degree

At Melbourne you can focus on your chosen field of architecture from day one, and complement your course with subjects from outside your discipline.

First you will complete a three year undergraduate degree with an architecture major through the Bachelor of Design.

As a student in the Bachelor of Design, you’ll use innovative processes to solve problems creatively, and determine solutions for a better future. You will develop knowledge and skills, and study real projects within the built environment, engineering, performing and visual arts, and technology disciplines. You can focus on one or two majors, or complete a major and a minor.

2. Enter the Master of Architecture

Next, you will choose the Master of Architecture to qualify as a professionally accredited architect.

You can complete the Master of Architecture in two years if you have studied an architecture major in your undergraduate degree.

Alternatively, you can complete the Bachelor of Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Music or Science with a design and a history subject at Melbourne and then undertake the three-year Master of Architecture.
