How to become a social worker

Standard entry

1. Undergraduate degree

First you need to meet the entry requirements for your undergraduate degree.

    2. Graduate degree

    The Master of Social Work also has specific prerequisites to be considered for entry. You must: complete an undergraduate degree with at least one year of full time study in the social sciences or equivalent, complete at least 40 hours of work experience, submit a personal statement, and nominate a professional referee.

    Master of Social WorkApplicants who receive an ATAR (or notional ATAR) between 96.00 and 99.85 in Year 12 and commence and complete an undergraduate course at the University of Melbourne with a weighted average mark of 65% or higher are guaranteed a Commonwealth Supported Place (for domestic students) or international fee place. Undergraduate degree must be completed with at least one year of full-time studies in social sciences. Applicants must also provide evidence of paid or volunteer work experience, a personal statement, and a professional referee report.
