What you will learn

Gain contemporary skills and knowledge.

Screen-based media is a powerful means of storytelling and communication, central to both our personal lives and an essential tool for advocacy, influence and action in communities and workplaces.

As an integral part of compelling screen-based projects, this course focuses on narrative, ensemble and composition. Drawing on both contemporary approaches to storytelling and ‘new’ screen media, you'll investigate the relationships between objects, people and spaces.

It is ideal for anyone interested in using screen media, whether for personal artistic projects or professional settings, and wants to gain the skills and knowledge to use it in more engaging, impactful ways.

Screen Studies: The Collective can also be complemented with the other short courses in our Screen Studies suite, which is part of Creative Arts Studios. See course details for more information.

Gain foundational understanding of narrative and composition

Guided by directing, production and creativity experts from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, you'll explore foundational screen techniques with focus on complex narratives, ensemble, visual composition and original composition. You'll gain an overview of historical and contemporary practices and well as various screen types and scale, roles and responsibilities within production.

Find your screen story

Be encouraged to view screen-media as limited only by your vision. Engage in exploratory practices and expression based on the collective, and learn to find your own screen story. This could be for a short film or series, depending on your interest.

Develop a creative project

Drawing on your new skills and knowledge, you'll have the opportunity to create your own short experimental screen project. Whether you want to explore something new, or build on an existing area of interest, this will allow you to develop your practice and improve confidence.
