Our Student Life commitment

Students are at the heart of the University of Melbourne community. Through the Student Life program, you’ll be:

  • Guided through your start to University with faculty-specific inductions, Melbourne Commencement Ceremonies, the Melbourne Peer Mentor Program and first-year Discovery Subjects
  • Mentored by our network of academic advisers and peer and industry mentors, who can provide personalised advice throughout your studies
  • Recognised for contributing to the communities around you and for developing your capabilities outside the classroom by participating in Melbourne Plus
  • Conclude your degree with a Capstone experience that brings together the skills and knowledge you’ll develop during your degree.

Be matched with a later-year student from your faculty, as well as a group of your first-year peers, in an instant network of friendly faces to touch base with. Benefit from an insider’s experience, ask for advice and guidance in navigating uni life and make friends with other students in your degree. Then, develop your leadership and interpersonal skills becoming a peer mentor yourself.

Academic Advising at Melbourne

Gain connections, insights and support by meeting up with your academic advisor each semester. Your advisor can provide you with the guidance, motivation, perspectives and knowledge to help you think through your experience at uni, what you want to achieve, what’s challenging you and how to make the most of what’s on offer. Your first year Discovery subjects and modules will help you build a strong sense of connection with your cohort; understand more about the current ‘big ideas’ and real-world problems within your discipline; and provide you with the skills and knowledge you’ll need to make the most of your studies at Melbourne.

Build your capabilities in People Leadership, Community Engagement, Sustainability Advocacy or Innovation through Melbourne Plus. By choosing an activity from the Catalogue, not only can you engage in co-curricular opportunities that will develop your connections and your capabilities, but you can get officially recognised with a digital credential that you can share on your social networks.
