Conditional Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

Secure your place to study while you finalise outstanding results or documents. This page explains how a conditional Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) works, what you need to provide, and what happens next.

A Confirmation of Enrolment, usually called a CoE, is an official document that international students receive once they have accepted their offer of admission, and we have received their tuition fee deposit payment.

The CoE confirms your enrolment in an educational institution in Australia. You will need your CoE to lodge a student visa application to study in Australia. Your CoE contains information about you and the program you will be studying, including the estimated cost and duration.

If your offer is conditional on submitting final results, you may still be able to accept it and pay your tuition fee deposit before those results are available. This is done through the conditional CoE process.

A conditional CoE can be issued if your results will be released too late for you to apply for a student visa in time to arrive in Australia and start studying in your desired intake, and the University is satisfied that you are likely to meet the academic entry requirements.

Your CoE will list any outstanding conditions. To enrol in your program, you must meet these conditions and provide official evidence. You must confirm that your results or completion statement will be available by the required results deadline before starting this process.

If you have a conditional offer for an undergraduate or graduate coursework program, you may be eligible to apply for a conditional CoE if you meet all the following criteria:

  • Are completing your current qualification (for undergraduate applicants, this must be an approved international qualification; for graduate applicants, this must be your final semester of study)
  • Have a conditional offer for the next available intake where the only outstanding condition is completion of your current qualification (this may include achieving a specified GPA, WAM or score, or completing required subjects, majors or examinations such as SAT/ACT/AP)
  • Have met the English language requirements
  • Have satisfied the relevant course prerequisites (where applicable)
  • Have appointed an authorised education agent to support your application. If you do not currently have an authorised education agent, you may appoint one after submitting your application.
    • If you're a current University of Melbourne student applying for a graduate coursework program, you do not need to appoint an authorised education agent.

When assessing a request for a conditional CoE, the University may apply a higher academic standard to ensure you are likely to satisfy your final academic condition.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, speak with your authorised education agent about applying. All applications for a conditional CoE must be submitted by your authorised education agent on your behalf. Apply as early as possible, as places are limited and visa processing times may vary.

If your conditional CoE is approved, you will receive a new conditional offer by email with instructions on how to accept.

To proceed, you must:

  • Complete the International Acceptance Agreement
  • Pay the required tuition fee deposit
  • Once these steps are completed, the University will issue your CoE, allowing you to begin your student visa application.

After your final results are released

You must provide:

  • Your final official transcript
  • Evidence of course completion.

These documents must be submitted as soon as possible, and no later than the specified deadline, to enrol and register for classes.

Before making travel arrangements

  • Do not make non-refundable travel or accommodation arrangements until you are formally admitted to your course.
  • If you do not meet the academic conditions of your offer, your CoE may be cancelled, and the Department of Home Affairs will be notified.
  • If you do not meet the academic conditions of your offer, you will be eligible for a refund of tuition fees paid in accordance with the University refund policy.

You will be notified if your request is unsuccessful.

Depending on your circumstances, there may not be enough time to obtain a visa for the upcoming intake. You may need to:

  • Defer your offer (if this option is available), or
  • Reapply for a future intake once you have completed your course and can provide a full academic transcript.

Some programs do not participate in the conditional CoE process. For more information, contact your authorised education agent.
