Studying remotely

We have a wide range of digital tools and student services to help you study remotely, stay connected to your network and get your work done!

There are some basic steps that you can take to help set up your space and make studying remotely as comfortable as possible. If you'd like more information about our learning environment standards, access the guide on good practices and appropriate behaviours for studying online.

Set up your desk

Ensure your desk has enough space on top for all required items and that there is nothing underneath restricting your leg room. Select a well-fitting comfortable chair with back support.

Adjust your posture

  1. Shoulders relaxed and symmetrical.
  2. Elbows close to the sides of the body.
  3. Forearms approximately parallel to the floor.
  4. Thighs approximately parallel to the floor.
  5. Feet flat on the floor or supported on a footrest or sturdy box.

If you have a standing desk, follow the first 3 points.

Check your screens

Position your computer monitor so the top of the screen is approximately at eye height.

  • If using a desktop computer: the monitor should be directly in front of you, about arm’s reach away.
  • If using a laptop: raise it on a laptop riser or a box/books/stand. A separate keyboard and a mouse will be required.

Position your keyboard and mouse

Position your keyboard on the desktop in front of you at a distance from the desk edge that feels comfortable and supportive for your arms and shoulders. Keep your mouse in close to the keyboard.

Remember to take breaks

Schedule time for regular breaks. Taking  a 2-minute break away from your desk every 30 minutes to stretch and move can help you stay focussed and motivated.

Accessibility and video conferencing

You can learn more about video conferencing, access our guides on how to use accessibility software tools in conjunction with Zoom and find other resources at accessibility information.
