Tracey navigates academic life and cultural exchange from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne
As a Vietnamese student immersed in the Bachelor of Arts program majoring in Media and Communication at the esteemed University of Melbourne, my academic journey has been nothing short of transformative.
The University of Melbourne, sometimes referred to as UniMelb, is a haven for scholarly pursuit and thought experimentation. I'm fascinated by the wide range of courses and modules that explore the complexities of mass media, digital communication, and cultural discourse because I'm an avid student of media and communication. The lecturers are knowledgeable academics and prominent members of industry who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their talks.
The diverse array of cultures and ethnicities at UniMelb is among the most alluring features of campus life. I was initially intimidated by the idea of coming into a foreign environment, but the kindness and inclusion of the campus community gave me comfort. Students from Vietnam and other countries come together at UniMelb to create a melting pot, sharing ideas, taking part in cultural events, and creating lifelong friendships. I found a sense of home that transcends location in the midst of the busy university life.
Central to my journey at the University of Melbourne has been the profound sense of camaraderie fostered by IVSUM – the International Vietnamese Students’ Union at Melbourne. This vibrant student organization serves as a beacon of unity and solidarity for Vietnamese students navigating the labyrinthine corridors of academia in a foreign land. IVSUM organises an eclectic array of events, from cultural showcases and language exchanges to academic symposiums and career workshops. Through IVSUM, I've found a second family—a sanctuary where I can reminisce about the streets of Saigon, savor the flavors of home-cooked pho, and revel in the shared heritage that binds us together.

Beyond the confines of lecture halls and tutorials, UniMelb offers a myriad of academic resources to facilitate student success. From dedicated academic advisors and peer tutoring programs to state-of-the-art research facilities and multimedia labs, the university ecosystem is replete with tools and support mechanisms to nurture student growth and development. As a Media and Communications major, I've had the opportunity to collaborate on research projects, intern at leading media outlets, and hone my craft under the tutelage of esteemed mentors.
A fine balance between academic rigour and personal enrichment characterises university life at UniMelb. Even if schoolwork is the cornerstone of our academic endeavours, pursuing passions outside of the classroom and fostering holistic well-being are just as vital. There are plenty of opportunities for rest and renewal, whether it's taking in Melbourne's thriving cultural scene, playing recreational sports, or just enjoying the peace and quiet of the campus parklands.

As I reflect, I feel gratitude for the life-changing events and priceless friendships I acquired during my journey at the University of Melbourne. My intellectual horizon shave expanded thanks to UniMelb, which has also cultivated in me a genuine awareness for cultural diversity, flexibility, and resilience. I have enduring connections, priceless experiences, and a steadfast sense of purpose with me as I get ready to start the next chapter of my adventure. The University of Melbourne has served as a catalyst for personal development, empowerment, and self-discovery rather than just being a place of higher education.
UniMelb beckons as a beacon of chance and promise for Vietnamese students hoping to set out on a similar journey; it's a place where dreams take flight and destiny are fashioned among the infinite expanse of knowledge and discovery.
