Petra Stock, 2021 Student Journalist of the Year winner, Master of Journalism

Master of Journalism student Petra Stock won the Student Journalist of the Year Award at the 2021 Melbourne Press Club’s coveted Quill Awards. Recognised for her story “National Treasure” published in Australian Geographic, Stock’s article tells the rise and decline of Australian small coins, exploring the iconic Australian wildlife designs and the artist behind it.

Stock was one of three University of Melbourne students nominated for the 2021 award.

Connor Clery, PhD candidate – Master of International Relations

'I chose the Master of International Relations because I knew it would lead to graduate research opportunities.

I enjoyed my master’s degree because I found the minor thesis both challenging and rewarding – others in my cohort participated in graduate societies or undertook internships, which can also make for a satisfying degree.

I’m excited to have just begun the Doctor of Philosophy - Arts. My research engages a novel approach to understanding security, to examine what resistance practices articulated by rebel political organisations can tell us about the politics of state sovereignty. It will involve engaging with exciting literatures and complex political issues, and the challenging task of communicating my analyses and interpretations to others.’

Pippa Milne, Senior Curator, Monash Gallery of Art – Master of Art Curatorship

“I wanted to get to know the mechanics of the art world, and the dynamics of exhibition making, and the degree was a good stepping off point for this,” she explains. “I loved the overviews of the history of exhibitions and writing about contemporary art, and appreciated being put in direct contact with figures from the gallery scene. Lecturers and guest speakers offered genuine and unfiltered views of the way this industry works.”

Pippa completed an internship at the Venice Biennale with the Australia Council, and was engaged as Emerging Curator for Victoria at the Venice Biennale two years later.

Now Senior Curator at Monash Gallery of Art, Pippa advises those thinking about a career in art curatorship to make the most of the opportunities the Master of Art Curatorship affords them.
