Evaluation and Implementation Science

Focus on a range of current theories and approaches to health program design and implementation

Why study evaluation and implementation science?

Students in this elective stream gain expertise to seamlessly integrate evaluation theory, approaches and methodologies into practical applications. They will be equipped to serve as health program evaluators and to become contributing members of evaluation teams locally, nationally or internationally. Their proficiency spans public health program domains including child health, mental health, sexual health, global health, and incorporates primary care, acute care and community care to address the needs of broad population groups such as the elderly, CALD, LGBTIQ, children and people seeking asylum.

Study options in evaluation and implementation science

Join a community of researchers transforming the Australian health system. Some of our key projects include:

  • The Closing the Gap (CTG) Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) co-payment measure, which reduced PBS medicine co-payments to eligible Indigenous Australians.
  • Quality review of national primary care telephone triage and advice lines led by the university’s Dr Rosemary McKenzie. This project led to the development of Australia’s first Standard for Managing Health Contact Centres.
  • DHHS North Division Population Health Capacity Building Program led by the university’s Dr Helen Jordan.

Promote the understanding and use of evaluation and implementation science methods in healthcare at the Evaluation and Implementation Science Unit at the university’s Centre for Health Policy. Engage in research in areas such as:

  • Developing innovative approaches to evaluation
  • Health Literacy
  • Health system reform and policymaking
  • Improving health system responsiveness to diversity
  • Quality, safety and consumer engagement in health.

Hear from our alumni

I gained experience in evaluation and implementation science; this allowed me to become an ‘evaluation consultant’ and work with Doctor of Physiotherapy students to develop an evaluation plan for their own health promotion assessments. The knowledge and skills learned during my MPH has equipped me with solid of foundations in terms of knowledge, skills and job-readiness.

My experience (during the MPH) developing project plans is incredibly relevant to my work at the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC). Project planning and management, something we learnt in detail during the MPH, is also a major part of my work with the Lung Cancer team at the University of Melbourne.
