Webinar 3: Developing Middle Leaders

Developing Middle Leaders

Middle leaders are a fundamental to school improvement agendas. Given middle leaders occupy a unique position between teachers and senior leadership, their sphere of influence is far reaching in any school context. However, we also know from previous research that many of these leaders frequently do not have opportunities to develop and enhance their leadership skills and knowledge.

In this one-hour webinar led by Dr Pauline Thompson, we will discuss how principals as instructional leaders support the identification and development of middle leaders in schools.

We will specifically consider the practices that these leaders exhibited including:

  • Talent identification strategies, so that all teachers, including the quiet achievers, have access to middle leadership roles.
  • Targeted professional development to support middle leaders to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Equity of access to leadership roles regardless of time fraction.
  • Developing middle leadership autonomy through relational trust.
