Our new Graduate Degree Packages will let you enrol directly through VTAC, into the graduate degree of your choice. In addition, if you’re a domestic student you will be guaranteed a Commonwealth Supported Place, as long as you fulfil the study requirements of your graduate course.
A Commonwealth Supported Place is an enrolment at the University of Melbourne which is subsidised by the Commonwealth Government. A student enrolled in a CSP contributes to the tuition fee of their course by paying the relevant Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) amount up-front or in a deferred arrangement through HECS-HELP - not a full fee payment up front.
Some professions require a graduate degree for entry. Graduate degrees also give you the opportunity to expand your experience, more opportunities within your chosen career and often a higher income.* Completing a graduate degree pathway will give you a higher level qualification than a traditional double degree and will demonstrate to employers your expertise and leadership in your field. Having a guaranteed place will allow you to start your undergraduate degree knowing that a place is waiting for you.

Both the Chancellor’s Scholarship program and the new Graduate Degree Packages will be available for application through VTAC, for entry in February 2019. Simply find the code of the course you wish to study and add it to your preferences. You will have several chances to change your course preferences in order to apply for the guarantee that’s best for you, once you receive your ATAR.
A small number of guaranteed pathways listed here may not appear in the VTAC guide in 2018-19, but will be honoured by the University.
For Graduate Pathway entry outside of the Chancellor’s Scholarship program and Graduate Degree Packages, the University will retain a record of your entering ATAR, and will honour your guarantee.
We offer several different types of guarantee pathways. However, if you are not successful in securing one, don’t worry - at least 50% of Commonwealth Supported graduate school places (CSPs) will be reserved for students who don’t secure a guarantee.
Since 2015, the University of Melbourne has provided a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) for the studies undertaken toward a course.
The WAM provides an indication of overall academic performance in each course that you study, and reflects the numeric mark (e.g. 45%, 87%) you obtain for each subject, as well as the size of each subject. A 25 point subject will count twice as heavily toward then WAM than a 12.5 point subject. Find out more on how the WAM is calculated. The WAM is calculated progressively as you complete your degree.
The Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT) is a web-based tool to help identify the optimal mix of knowledge and personal skills to become a successful teacher. It asks about previous experience, motivations to teach; and includes questions on literacy and numeracy skills, other abilities, and disposition. It is required for entry to our graduate teaching programs, and you take the test online.
Students entering the Master of Teaching through a Graduate Degree Package will need to complete the TCAT when they apply for their undergraduate degree, or at some stage during their undergraduate degree.
Students who successfully complete the TCAT when applying for their undergraduate degree (along with meeting the other requirements), will have assurance of a guaranteed Commonwealth Supported Place in their Master of Teaching course. Students who choose to complete the TCAT during their undergraduate degree will still be able to apply for the Graduate Degree Package as usual, however their graduate place will be contingent on successfully completing the TCAT during that time. Students entering the Master of Teaching through the standard entry can complete the TCAT when they apply for the graduate program.
This interview component is an 8 station Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Each station takes 5 minutes and has a single interviewer. The MMI aims to assess non-academic qualities including cultural sensitivity, maturity, collaboration, reliability and communication skills. The stations could include practical tasks, answering questions, commenting on short films, and explaining thinking.
A cognate discipline is a similar or closely related subject area. If you have completed studies in a cognate discipline you may be eligible for advanced standing or credit as recognition of prior learning.
No, you will need to apply separately for a place in a standard bachelors degree. However, there will be several opportunities to change your preferences with VTAC once results come out, so you'll be able to select the course preference that's right for you.
