A place to belong: Anna’s International House scholarship journey
Leaving Sydney to begin a new chapter in Melbourne was a big step for Anna, but one she embraced with enthusiasm.
A fresh start in Melbourne
Now studying a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the University of Melbourne, Anna was drawn to the University's academic programs and the opportunity to learn from a professor she greatly admired.
The move also offered the chance to challenge herself, gain independence and experience life in a new city.
"I wanted to try something new and push myself outside my comfort zone," Anna says. "Moving interstate felt like the perfect opportunity to grow while still having access to a supportive community."
Several scholarships helped cover both university and living expenses, giving Anna the confidence to make Melbourne her new home.

Finding a community beyond the classroom
Now in her third year at International House, Anna has received multiple IH scholarships, recognising her academic achievements, involvement in college life and contributions to the community. In 2026, she was awarded the RR and MM Officer Scholarship as a returning student.
What initially drew Anna to International House was the opportunity to experience residential college life within a uniquely diverse and internationally minded community.
"I was really excited by the idea of living in a place where people came from so many different backgrounds and life experiences," Anna says. "Many residents have lived in multiple countries, so there are always new perspectives to learn from and conversations that broaden your worldview."
The vibrant community quickly lived up to her expectations.
"There's always something going on," Anna says."Being able to just pull up to each other's rooms after a long day of uni to talk, watch a show and unwind is so special. It really just feels like an extended school camp with friends."
Living alongside students from different backgrounds has helped Anna build lasting friendships and broaden her perspective.

Another highlight has been joining the International House rowing team.
"As painful as the 5am wake-ups were, watching the sunrise as we row on the Yarra River was such an amazing experience."
From community events to rowing and shared experiences, Anna says International House has given her a strong sense of belonging and made Melbourne feel like home.
The freedom to make the most of university life
Scholarship support has allowed Anna to focus on her studies while fully embracing residential college life.
"The scholarships have given me the freedom to enjoy the experience of living at college and make the most of everything that's on offer," she says.
Rather than juggling significant work commitments, Anna has been able to invest her time in academic, social and extracurricular opportunities.

Taking a chance can change everything
For students considering a scholarship application, Anna's advice is simple:
"Just go for it. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't get one, but you'll never know what's possible if you don't apply. It's absolutely worth taking the chance."
Looking back, Anna says moving to Melbourne was one of the best decisions she has made. With the support of scholarships and the welcoming International House community, she has found not only a place to live, but a place to belong.
