Highlights of the Doctor of Optometry experience

Day-to-day experience

Become an active member of our hands-on department right from day one. Through extensive placements at premier healthcare providers each year, you'll experience optometry in context as your clinical skills rapidly evolve.

Engage regularly with global experts pioneering research into specialized eye conditions like posterior eye disease, glaucoma and anterior eye problems. Theory meets practice as you apply learnings in real patient scenarios.

You'll be part of a small but vibrant cohort, enjoying an active student community. In final year, you'll even lead a two-day student conference, forging connections with potential employers.

Learning mode

Theory and practice-based learning will direct you through the program. A highly practical course, the OD program will see you regularly apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world situations, with a heavy emphasis on clinical practice and contact hours.

As you progress, your one-on-one patient load will increase in line with your growing expertise. By third and fourth year, it's all about immersive direct patient care to ensure you're work-ready.

Opportunities

This degree provides you with over 1,000 hours of clinical practice throughout the program. With this high level of exposure, you will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of what clinical practice path may best suit you post-graduation.
