Admission criteria
In order to be considered for entry into this course, you must have:
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Information Technology or a related field with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65% (or equivalent) or
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65% (or equivalent) and at least two years of relevant full-time work experience or
- At least six years of relevant full-time work experience.
Non-technical background
You need to be ready to learn programming, mathematical reasoning, and delve into technical content.
Technical background
If you're already using AI, are familiar with coding and meet all other requirements, you may be awarded up to 50 points of credit.
Where degree levels are referenced, levels align with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Applications are assessed against these standards.
Where our admission criteria includes a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) and/or specific subject criteria, these are based on University of Melbourne grades and subjects. If you've studied elsewhere, we'll assess your relevant prior studies and equivalent grades. Your final WAM may be adjusted depending on your previous institution's accreditation, subject grading, and pass marks.
English language requirements
All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test. If you are from a non-English speaking background, the required standard of English for this degree is one of the following English proficiency test scores:

Advanced Standing
Prior studies may be credited towards your degree and potentially reduce the duration of your course. This is known as Advanced Standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning).
Recognition of prior learning (RPL), also known as advanced standing may be available for those with relevant study or professional work experience.
Applicants with the following may be awarded up to 50 points of credit:
- An undergraduate degree in a related field with a weighted average mark of at least 65% or equivalent and two years of relevant full-time work experience or
- A four-year Honours degree in Information Technology with a weighted average mark of at least 65% or equivalent or
- A Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence or equivalent.

- Data Analyst or Data Scientist
- Database Manager
- IT Manager
- Network or Systems Engineer, Systems Analyst
- Product or Operations Manager
- Research Assistant (computational focus)
- Software Developer or Software Engineer.
