Profile
Dr. Michael M
Dr Michael’s journey in psychiatry began at the University of Melbourne, where he completed his Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and Master of Psychiatry. His education provided essential knowledge and connected him with leading experts and fellow students, many of whom would become key to his professional development. The Master of Psychiatry, in particular, offered the specialised training and academic rigour that laid the groundwork for his career.
Michael’s decision to pursue psychiatry came from a desire to engage deeply with the field, and the University of Melbourne's highly regarded curriculum provided the ideal environment to achieve this. His experience in the subject Special Topics in Psychiatry fuelled his passion for psychiatric education, which continues today in his role as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne. His education prepared him for both the roles he holds today and the ones he has held recently, such as his former position as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre and his current work at the University of Melbourne Health Service.
The relationships Michael developed with peers and mentors during his studies played a pivotal role in his career progression. These connections led him to opportunities in forensic psychiatry and teaching, which have been central to his professional journey. His work with marginalised populations, particularly in prisons, reflects his compassionate and comprehensive approach to mental health care.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Michael co-founded The Psych Review, a podcast that reviews recent developments in Australian psychiatry. He met one of the other founders of the podcast during his Master of Psychiatry studies, which was instrumental in launching the initiative. The podcast has helped students prepare for exams and helps the general public to engage with the latest research, bridging clinical practice and academic discourse—something Michael considers a significant achievement.
Michael encourages future students to apply to the University of Melbourne’s Master of Psychiatry. The networking opportunities through online meetings, mentorship, and the potential to advance your academic career or enhance your clinical practice are, in his view, what makes the course so valuable.
