Course overview

Overview

Clinical ultrasound has made a dramatic impact on patient management in perioperative, critical care, emergency medicine, surgery and internal medicine environments. An expanding range of clinicians are now using clinical ultrasound, including those in primary care, remote and rural medicine, sports medicine, prehospital/paramedicine, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, and other branches of allied health.

The Specialist Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound (Practical) is tailored to the needs of health professionals looking to gain expertise in point-of-care ultrasound.  It offers the flexibility to select subjects that best align with their clinical practice.

The practical version of this certificate incorporates a robust e-learning component aiming to enhance students’ knowledge and develop their skills in image acquisition, interpretation, and integration to their clinical practice.

Additionally, the hands-on segment of the course is thoughtfully structured to accommodate individuals residing outside of Melbourne, offering flexibility. It involves logbooks and image reviews, which can be completed using ultrasound simulators at the University of Melbourne or by conducting scans at their own workplace. There is a requirement to submit a minimum number of relevant images for assessment.

This course may be reimbursed as Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Our clinical ultrasound courses are the only fully online Australian university courses that may enable you to gain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points while building towards an award qualification.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for all health professionals interested in clinical ultrasound, regardless of their previous experience or knowledge level.

It is particularly valuable for emergency physicians, internal medicine physicians, anaesthetists, intensive care specialists, surgeons, cardiologists, GPs, rural doctors and other health professionals looking to implement these skills in their workplace, via a structured training program.

Importantly, for this course students MUST have access to either ultrasound simulators or ultrasound machines as they are required to upload images and maintain a logbook of their ultrasound examinations as part of the assessments.

Enrolled students can choose to reserve ultrasound simulators at the University of Melbourne. However, the completion of all practical sessions using simulators depends on simulator availability.

International students are welcome to study this course. However, please note that this course is not available to international students who require a student visa to study in Australia as it does not meet the onshore study requirements and it is not registered with CRICOS.

Course aims

This course provides health professionals with the knowledge base to become competent in point-of-care ultrasound. The distance-based education model we have adopted is flexible and removes the barriers of geographical disparity.
