Master of Dance creative application requirements

The Master of Dance has additional requirements used as part of the selection process. Find out everything you need to know about the creative task and interview process.

To be considered for selection into the Master of Dance, you need to submit a course application and prepare a folio. If you're shortlisted, you'll need to attend an interview.

Please note that this course is suspended for the 2027 intake.

What to prepare

Your folio should:

  • Demonstrate a range of breadth of practice (examples of practice can include short video clips of performance, choreography, and interdisciplinary practice), and
  • Contain evidence of teaching and/or leadership of dance work such as through workshops, artistic direction, and/or community practice, and
  • Be a maximum of 30 minutes, and
  • Contain at least one of the following, appropriately titled and clearly identifying you:
    • Choreographic work/s authored by you within the last five years;
    • Dance performance in an original choreography or reconstruction;
    • Portfolio of your current dance teaching practice;
    • Screen or digital dance work made by you;
    • And/or portfolio of relevant dance work in a specialist area.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a 20-minute online interview.

Applicants should prepare to discuss:

  • Intentions and goals in undertaking the course
  • Professional and/or academic history in relation to the field
  • Understanding of concepts and processes particular to dance as a field of knowledge

How to submit your selection tasks

Your folio must be uploaded and submitted via the Creative Application Platform (SlideRoom).  We recommend allowing plenty of time to prepare and submit your creative tasks. Applications after the published closing day cannot be accepted.

How you'll be assessed

All applicants will be ranked according to the outlined criteria, up to the capacity of places in the course.

The folio will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Clarity and distinctiveness of expression
  • Imaginative and creative capacity
  • Performance quality and technical skills
  • Advanced skills in embodied communication

The interview will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Motivation for undertaking the course
  • Ability to communicate technical and creative ideas
  • Understanding of dance and its significance
  • Articulation of their own practice and aspirations
  • Knowledge about own practice, its context and histories
