Master of Screenwriting creative application requirements

The Master of Screenwriting has additional requirements used as part of the selection process. Find out everything you need to know about the application process.

To be considered for selection into the Master of Screenwriting, you need to submit a course application and prepare a folio. If shortlisted, applicants will be required to attend an interview.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview.

What to prepare

Folio

  • Provide samples of creative writing (1000-2000 words) in either prose or screen format (e.g. short story, short script, extract from a manuscript/book with synopsis).
  • Upload a document with two story concepts for proposed screenplays that could be developed during the course (250 words for each concept).
    Please convey a sense of how the story begins, and how it builds to a climax.

If shortlisted for an interview, you will be asked to elaborate and discuss these concepts in detail.

Curriculum Vitae

Attach a CV detailing all qualifications, relevant employment experience, and any screenwriting credits and screen production credits. Include format, length of work, and your role.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to discuss their creative work with an interview panel.

Further information will be given to each candidate invited to interview.

The interview will run for approximately 25 minutes and will be conducted online via Zoom.

How to submit your selection tasks

Your folio must be uploaded and submitted via the Creative Application Platform (SlideRoom). We recommend allowing plenty of time to prepare and submit your creative tasks. Applications after the published closing day cannot be accepted.

How you'll be assessed

All applicants will be ranked according to the outlined criteria, up to the capacity of places in the course.

The folio will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Relevant previous experience
  • Writing skills and storytelling ability
  • Imaginative and creative capacity

The interview will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Understanding of the course structure and expectations of the program
  • Level of maturity and self-motivation required for the course
  • Storytelling ability and potential for development
  • Clarity and confidence of communication
  • Articulation of their own practice and aspirations
  • Knowledge of the discipline and its practitioners

Conditions of enrolment

Successful applicants will be required to hold a current Working with Children Check (Volunteer), and this must remain valid for the duration of the course.
