At home with his parents, Jonathan Huang mainly speaks Cantonese. “Growing up, English was always a tough subject, until Year 12, when I tried really hard at it,” he says. When he applied for the University’s Bachelor of Commerce course, Jonathan also lodged a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application for special consideration under Access Melbourne for financial hardship and his non-English speaking background. He was awarded a $5000 annual Access Melbourne Scholarship. Now fluent enough to tutor in VCE English, Jonathan’s tells students: “If you think you’re eligible for SEAS or you’re on the fence about whether you’re eligible or not, just go for it.”
