Undergraduate course transfer applications

Are you currently studying an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne and considering switching to a different course? If so, you can apply for an internal transfer to another undergraduate course through our Undergraduate Course Transfer form.

Your application will be considered alongside all external applications. Selection is based on several factors including satisfying the entry requirements, the availability of places and your academic performance.

Why apply directly for an internal undergraduate course transfer?

Applying directly comes with several benefits:

  1. Fast and simple – We already have access to your academic records and results.
  2. No processing fees – Submit your application at no cost
  3. Better timing – Aligns with the University's results release and semester intake dates.

Courses available:

Bachelor of Agriculture, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Biomedicine, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Oral Health, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or Bachelor of Music.

Note: Some courses are only available for course transfer in the start-year intake. Additionally, submitting an undergraduate course transfer application does not guarantee a place in your desired course, as offers are subject to availability.

Ready to apply? Apply now

2026 Semester 1 start-year intake (February) 1 September to 15 December. For Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music: 1 to 30 September

2026 Semester 2 mid-year intake (July) 1 April – 15 May

We encourage you to apply early, as internal course applications may close earlier due to strict quota restrictions.

Applicants with at least one-year of Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL) will be assessed based on their Weighted Average Mark (WAM) and whether they meet any subject prerequisites and competitive entry thresholds.

Applicants with less than one-year EFTSL will be assessed using a combination of their WAM and secondary school results, dependent on the course and amount of tertiary study completed.

Applicants seeking to transfer into a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Music will be selected based on the outcome of a talent-based assessment.

You’re eligible to apply for an undergraduate course transfer if you:

  • Are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne
  • For the Bachelor of Fine Arts or the Bachelor of Music, additional requirements, such as a portfolio, audition, or interview, will also apply
  • Have successfully completed or are on track to complete at least 37.5 credit points.

After you submit your application, you will receive a conditional offer within 5-10 business days outlining the requirements you must meet to be eligible for a course offer.

Once your semester results are released, your application will be assessed. You will be notified of the outcome shortly thereafter, along with instructions and key dates for withdrawing from your current course and enrolling in your new course, if applicable.

Current students who commenced their studies with us as an international student but have recently been granted Australian permanent residency are required to be assessed for a Commonwealth Supported Place.

Follow these instructions to let us know about your change of citizenship, and once you have confirmation that your citizenship has been updated, admissions will create and assess a CSP course application on your behalf. You will be assessed competitively in comparison to all other domestic students in the course (both newly commencing and current students). If your application is not successful, your current fee-paying place will remain unaffected.

  • Remain enrolled in your current course and re-enrol in units for the following year during the designated re-enrolment period.
  • Pay any outstanding fees related to your current enrolment.

If your application is unsuccessful, you will be notified. You may choose to apply again in the next intake or explore alternative entry pathways by contacting Stop 1.

To withdraw your application—either before or after the closing date—please submit a message to Stop 1.

Advanced standing is not automatically assessed with your internal transfer application. If you wish to be considered for advanced standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning), you must submit a separate application after receiving and accepting your offer for the new course. Advanced standing is only granted for completed subjects that are equivalent in content and standard and align with the requirements of the target degree. Please note that credit assessments follow their own timeline and can take some time to process. For more information and to apply, visit: Apply for advanced standing.

Most scholarships will continue when you change to another course within the University. However, the duration of the scholarship will not be extended and therefore may not cover the full length of the course you are transferring to.

If your scholarship offer includes a condition that requires you to be enrolled in a specific course, your scholarship will cease when you withdraw from your course. Be sure to review your scholarship terms and seek advice if needed before applying.

See: Coursework scholarship conditions

If you were not offered a scholarship at the time you started your current course at the University, you will not be reconsidered for scholarship when you apply for an internal course transfer.

If you transfer into an alternate undergraduate course, your Graduate Degree Package place will lapse. You will need to apply directly to the graduate course during the final year of your undergraduate studies.

Your eligibility for the graduate course will be assessed based on your undergraduate academic performance.

If you wish to transfer to other institutions, you will need to apply through VTAC. You can still list a University of Melbourne course as a VTAC preference and you will be assessed as part of the VTAC offer rounds. If you have applied for a University of Melbourne course transfer through VTAC, please do not complete the internal course transfer form.

Applicants who are unsuccessful in their internal course transfer will be contacted by Admissions and invited to submit evidence if their academic performance was impacted by illness or other unforeseen circumstances. Any supporting documentation provided will be forwarded to the Faculty for further consideration.

You don’t need to upload any documents when submitting the internal transfer form. Admissions can access your high school qualifications and current University of Melbourne results directly. If further evidence is needed to confirm that you meet subject prerequisites, you’ll be contacted after your application has been assessed.
