Study in the heart of Melbourne

The Melbourne experience goes beyond the lecture theatre - internships, practical experience, workshops, mentoring, overseas study, student clubs and societies, volunteering, and much more.

Our students represent our greatest contribution to the world, so we offer a distinct and outstanding education and experience to prepare you for success as leaders, change agents, and global citizens.

You'll be located in the heart of Melbourne. Tram to your class holding the perfect coffee. Sweat it out in our campus gym. Duck into a shopping laneway or gallery with a friend. And end your day on a rooftop overlooking the city skyline or among the crowds at the MCG. At Melbourne, you’re perfectly positioned to work and play hard.

The community atmosphere of clubs at the University of Melbourne is unmatched and underpins all aspects of university life. Finding an anchor in a key group of like-minded friends is the ultimate way to enhance your overall university experience – and getting involved with different clubs is the best way to do so!

Our Student Life Commitment

We’re taking a renewed approach to student life, focusing on a series of key commitments to our valued undergraduate students.

  • You'll be assisted and guided through your transition to university, especially in your first semester
  • Develop a connection and sense of belonging with your peers and the wider University community
  • Have access to a network of advisers and mentors for personalised advice to ensure you make the most of your study and engagement opportunities
  • Have a transformative experience intellectually as well as personally, through excellent and challenging teaching and learning
  • Become active in responding to the needs of the local and global community through volunteering, service and social entrepreneurship
  • Be recognised for your individual and group achievements over the course of your degree.

New initiatives are already underway, which we will continue to develop and implement throughout 2020–21 to support these commitments.

Melbourne Commencement Ceremony

The beginning of your journey as a Melbourne student and a core feature of the Melbourne Orientation experience. Celebrate the start of your studies and be welcomed by University leaders, meet academics and your first-year peers within your faculty community.

Melbourne Peer Mentor Program

Be matched with a later-year student from your faculty, as well as a group of your first-year peers, in an instant network of friendly faces to touch base with as you transition into university life. Benefit from an insider’s experience, ask for advice and guidance in navigating uni life and make friends with other students in your degree. Then develop your leadership and interpersonal skills becoming a peer mentor yourself.

Academic Advice

Meet with an academic to identify your areas of strength and personal interest for you to explore further. They'll check in on your progress and help you make decisions about opportunities to take advantage of during your studies, as well as thinking about future direction.

Discovery Experiences

Your Discovery experiences will introduce you to our community so you can become a thriving participant. These include understanding the University’s role in Melbourne, Australia and globally; the importance of Indigenous heritage, knowledge and culture; respect for diversity and inclusion in and outside of the classroom; sustainability; as well as introducing you to the exciting cuttingedge research happening in your study area.

Wellbeing @ Melbourne

Caring for yourself is an important part of your study journey. Initiatives such as the Melbourne Peer Mentoring program, Academic Advising, Counselling and Psychological Services and the Health Promotion Program are designed to support you from day one.
