International House students join a safe and supportive community of like-minded people, where you make new friends, settle in quickly and gain the support you need to achieve academically and socially.

Our History

International House opened to residents in 1957 as Australia’s first ‘International House’ to create a community where international and Australian students could live together and learn from each other. Inspired by the International Houses Worldwide movement, its founders were driven to build international understanding and friendship between people of Australia and the world.

Wellbeing

At International House, your safety and wellbeing is paramount. Students of all cultures, genders, ages and degrees are welcome at IH. 24/7 support is provided by trained First Aid and Mental Health First Aid trained staff. Students have access to the University's medical and counselling services, as well as onsite specialist wellbeing staff and resources.

Community and Culture

Be involved in a rich cultural and social program, both within the House and the wider intercollegiate community. With various events throughout the year including Welcome Week, cultural nights celebrating cultures from around the world, music and theater performances. IHres have a reputation for supporting each other and being team players.

Music and Entertainment

International House has four individual music practice rooms, a band room, seven pianos including two grand pianos, a drum kit and various musical instruments for students to use - including a Chinese Guzheng (Zither). Students can share their talent at one of our many cultural and celebration events during the year. Our cinema room and games room are a great way to take a break and meet other people.

Sport

International House students compete in the Intercollegiate Sporting Program sport includes AFL, athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football (soccer), hockey, netball, rowing, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The program is open to students of all ability levels and the emphasis at International House is on participation. You can also stay active in our fully equipped gym, and walk or run socially in nearby Royal Park and Princes Park.

Academic Program

Our Academic Manager offers consultations and advice on study, careers and postgraduate pathways. Our purpose-built academic library, study rooms, and our onsite librarian help you study for you classes. For undergraduates, study groups and individual consultations offer subject-specific and degree learning support delivered by expert academic tutors. Graduates meet regularly for writing groups and other collaborative learning sessions.

Meals and Communal Dining

Eat together under the flags representing the countries and regions our students come from, three times a day. Meals are served in the Dimmick Dining Hall. Dining as a community is one of the best ways to meet people, catch up on news and stay in touch with other residents. Community Dinner (Wednesdays) and House Dinner (formal hall, Thursdays) are highlights of the week.

Career Development

Develop your network and build career pathways. Career events give students the chance to hear from alumni and industry, diplomatic and academic guests. Members of the graduate student community are encouraged to present on their area of study or research.
