In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
1. a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent. (Note: applicants who have completed professional degrees such as a BVSc or DVM will be assessed individually); or
2. a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75%; or
3. a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent;
  and
4. a research proposal
5. referee reports (except for applications who have graduated from the University of Melbourne within the last five years); and
6. the endorsement of a prospective supervisor
  meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
In selecting applicants, the selection committee will consider:
1. prior academic performance and, if relevant, professional qualifications;
2. understanding of the research question to be explored;
3. performance at an interview;
4. motivation and capacity to complete the course in a timely manner;
5. relevant prior research and/or professional experience;
6. and the referee reports.
The selection committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Selection and Admission into Graduate Research Courses Policy.
Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses.
The applicant's degree/s and/or professional experience must demonstrate that their knowledge of the discipline in which they plan to undertake their research is current. It is therefore expected that an applicant will have completed their tertiary studies and/or any relevant professional experience in the 10 years immediately prior to their intended entry to a PhD.
