Overview

Domestic applicants are Australian citizens and permanent residents, New Zealand citizens, and holders of a permanent humanitarian visa and can apply online.

Key dates

Applications for this program are open all year round, but selection committee meetings to assess applications are scheduled by the department twice per year. Cut-offs for these dates are 30 May and 31 October. Applicants will be advised by the FBE graduate research admissions team of any waiting times beyond the standard 8-12 weeks assessment period.

  1. Apply online
    1. Applicants to the University of Melbourne must use the online application form to apply for all graduate research degrees and to make a scholarship application (ensure you apply for course code: DR-PHILBE). International applicants may also apply through a University of Melbourne registered Overseas Representative.
  2. Attach supporting documents

    Please be sure to attach in full all relevant supporting documents (previous academic transcripts, evidence of English language requirements, GMAT/GRE score sheets). We will not be able to assess your application without these documents.

    1. Prospective Supervisor Support

      A copy of an email or letter indicating that your nominated Principal Supervisor has agreed to support your application.

      For a list of academics and their research expertise, please see the department’s Faculty and Research website

    2. Research Proposal (at least 1000 words)

      The research proposal is the starting point for your thesis. Ideally, it should include a brief introduction and conclusion, and the following outline:

      • The specific area of your intended research, with a clear title;
      • a brief summary of the key literature in this field, including a short bibliography and summary of key relevant works;
      • a sketch of the key research questions you hope to answer; and
      • a description of the methodology required to conduct this research.
    3. Referee Reports

      To support your application, you will need to nominate two referees who can comment on your academic ability and research potential.

      All referee reports must be submitted using the online tool. On submission of your application, your referees will be emailed a link to access the online referee form and they must provide their references using this online form. You will be notified when they submit the reference. Your application may be deemed as incomplete if the referee reports are not submitted before the application closing dates.

    4. Curriculum Vitae (Resume)

      A current CV outlining all your complete and incomplete academic qualifications and work experience, and details of any research publications (if relevant).

Things to consider before applying

Your Previous Qualifications

You must have completed a degree in an area that is relevant to your intended research topic.

You must demonstrate that you have a specialist understanding of the academic body of knowledge in this area.

Strong Evidence of Research Ability

You will usually have completed a research project at fourth year or at masters level, counting for at least 25% of that year's work.
