Hear from Health Leadership alumni

The Specialist Certificate in Clinical Leadership has empowered many graduates to accelerate their careers in various sectors. Below is a quote from Stuart Hastings, a cardiothoracic anaesthesiologist and Deputy Director of Cardiothorcic, Burns and Trauma anaesthesiology (State Services), and a story from Fadhullah Yousef, a Paediatric Registrar at Monash Hospital.

Quote from Stuart

"I am a cardiothoracic anaesthesiologist in a large public department and harboured aspirations to have a role in the shaping its development into the future, with respect to clinical practice and the department strategic plan. I felt ill equipped to do this without gaining insights into the aspects which made a good leader, and how I could shape my own practices and behaviours to access and utilise those skills. Since participating in the course, I have had the opportunity to use many of the learnings from the course since being elevated to one of the department deputy director roles. In particular, the process of strategic planning and big picture construction has been most useful, along with consumer engagement tactics and conflict resolution. There is no doubt any modicum of success in this role is directly attributed to my course participation."

Profile

Fadhullah Yousef

Before the program, I was working as a Paediatric Registrar at the Royal Children’s Hospital, having rotated through general medicine, endocrinology, oncology, and metabolic medicine. In my clinical roles I found that strong leadership, systems awareness, and communication skills became increasingly essential, especially when coordinating multidisciplinary teams, navigating hospital systems, and supporting junior staff. I enrolled in the program to build a leadership “toolkit” grounded in healthcare environments and to better prepare myself for future leadership roles.

The course is tailored to health professionals and acknowledges the unique pressures in clinical settings and this relevance made the lessons directly applicable to my day-to-day work. The opportunity to work on real organisational or departmental challenges gave me a chance to test theoretical leadership models in hospital settings. The modules on organisational structures, quality improvement, strategic planning, and governance were especially helpful. These are core areas often underemphasised in clinical training but critically needed in leadership roles. It enriched my capacity to lead on hospital committees and in departmental projects, allowing me to bring a structured approach to change initiatives, whether in processes, policy, or service delivery. It has refined my capacity to mentor and support junior doctors, by making me more aware of team dynamics, communication strategies, and ways to engage staff in change. It strengthened my confidence when advocating for system improvements and participating in governance forums.

In interviews and leadership applications, the credential has given substance to my leadership narrative and vision. The network connections and exposure to cross-disciplinary leaders have continued to provide mentoring and collaboration opportunities. I strongly recommend this program to early-career doctors, registrars, and clinicians aspiring to leadership.
