    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GAM is only available to students applying for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced). GAM applications will be taken into consideration during the selection process. For more information regarding Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM) please visit our websitehere.

I COMPLETED MY DEGREE OVERSEAS. AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

Applicants (including local and international applicants) who have obtained their qualifications outside of Australia must provide confirmation of completion of an Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited three year undergraduate sequence in Psychology as indicated at https://www.psychology.org.au/About-Us/What-we-do/Assessing-overseas-qualifications. Please note this assessment can take up to six weeks.

This must be uploaded to your online application as soon as possible and no later than Friday 30 November 2018.

I HAVE COMPLETED OR WILL COMPLETE MY BACHELOR DEGREE OR GRADUATE DIPLOMA WITH AN APAC ACCREDITED PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE. DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE OF COMPLETION/IMMINENT COMPLETION OF THE APAC ACCREDITED PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR AS PART OF MY APPLICATION?

No as this will be checked internally against the requirements as detailed at http://mdhs-study.unimelb.edu.au/degrees/undergraduate-studies-in-psychology/degree-structure#degree-structure as part of the selection process.

I HAVE OR WILL COMPLETED MY BACHELOR DEGREE OR GRADUATE DIPLOMA WITH AN APAC ACCREDITED PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR AT A UNIVERSITY OTHER THAN THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE. DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE OF COMPLETION/IMMINENT COMPLETION OF THE APAC ACCREDITED PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR AS PART OF MY APPLICATION?

You do not need to provide evidence as part of your application but if you are a successful applicant, your course offer will be conditional on provision of a final official transcript and letter from your university confirming you have completed your degree and that you have completed an APAC accredited psychology major.

WHAT DO I DO IF I DO NOT HAVE MY FINAL 2018 RESULTS BY FRIDAY 26 OCTOBER?

Apply by Friday 26 October 2018 and once your final 2018 results are available, upload your official results transcript to your online application by Friday 30 November 2018 (to be considered in December) or Friday 4 January 2019 (to be considered in January).

Applicants who are completing their studies at the University of Melbourne are not required to submit their final results as these will be obtained internally.

DO I NEED TO MAKE CONTACT WITH A PROSPECTIVE SUPERVISOR AS PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND, IF MY APPLICATION IS SUCCESSFUL, WHEN DO I NEED TO SUBMIT MY FOURTH YEAR RESEARCH PROJECT PREFERENCES?

You do not need to make contact with a prospective supervisor as part of the application process. Successful applicants will be advised of the project/supervisor preference process.

    CAN I DEFER MY OFFER?

No. You should apply for the year you would like to begin the course. If you decline your offer you are welcome to apply again for the following year but as the pool of applicants changes from year to year there is no guarantee you will be offered a place again.

CAN I APPLY TO STUDY PART-TIME?

Course duration is one year full-time or two years part-time. When the course is undertaken in part-time mode, coursework is completed in the first year and the research components are completed in second year.

Please apply for your preferred study mode. Successful applicants who apply for both a full-time and part-time place will only be considered for a full-time place. Applicants who apply for part-time only will not be disadvantaged during selection and, if successful, will receive a part-time offer. Any requests to change to part-time once you have accepted a full-time offer are subject to approval and will only be considered on the basis of extenuating circumstances.

    WHAT IS THE CUT-OFF SCORE?

Entry is highly competitive and both the total available places in our fourth year programs and the cut-off mark will vary each year depending on the availability of supervisors and resources in suitable project areas. Applicants will generally need an entry score over 80 (first class honours) or equivalent in order to be competitive for selection consideration.

CAN I REPEAT SUBJECTS TO INCREASE MY ENTRY SCORE?

The ask.unimelb information advises that if you have successfully passed a subject, you cannot re-enrol into it.

IF I REPEAT A SUBJECT I HAVE PREVIOUSLY FAILED, HOW WILL MY ENTRY SCORE BE CALCULATED?

If a student fails a second year or third year subject(s) at the first attempt and then passes that subject(s) on a subsequent attempt, both fail and pass results will be included in the fourth year entry score. This is consistent with the UoM weighted average mark (WAM) convention which can be viewed here.

CAN I TAKE EXTRA SUBJECTS TO INCREASE MY ENTRY SCORE?

Results obtained for subjects that have not been credited toward a completed award course (e.g. Community Access Program (CAP)) will normally not be considered.

I COMPLETED MY BACHELOR OF ARTS/BACHELOR OF SCIENCE PSYCHOLOGY SEQUENCE OVER FIVE/TEN YEARS AGO. AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

For 2019 entry, you are eligible to apply for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced). The Bachelor of Arts (Degree with Honours) requires completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree within the last five years. The Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours) requires completion of a Bachelor of Science degree within the last ten years.

I HAVE COMPLETED TWO DEGREES WITH AN APAC ACCREDITED PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR. HOW WILL MY ENTRY SCORE BE CALCULATED?

The fourth year entry score will be calculated on the most recent qualification. However, where an applicant has completed more than one APAC accredited qualification, this will be taken into consideration by the Selection Committee.
