Overview

200 point program (2 years full-time or part-time equivalent)

This is our most popular program for those who have completed undergraduate study in any discipline.

  • 12.5 credit points of Foundation compulsory (must be taken in the first 50 points of the program)
  • 25 credit points of Compulsory subjects
  • Between 25 and 50 credit points of Capstone subjects
  • Between 112.5 and 137.5 credit points of Elective subjects including

For students with an ESL background:

  • A maximum of 37.5 credit points of Foundation Elective subjects that must be taken in the first 50 credit points of the program
  • Between 62.5 and 137.5 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of ESL Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of Employability Elective subjects

For students without an ESL background:

  • A maximum of 37.5 credit points of Foundation Elective subjects that must be taken in the first 50 credit points of the program
  • Between 75 and 137.5 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of Employability Elective Subjects.

Note: Students may choose not to take Foundation Elective subjects and select only from the Graduate Elective list.

150 point program (1.5 years full-time or part-time equivalent)

This is for those with an undergraduate degree in a cognate or related discipline. No direct experience with Linguistics is necessary. It can be undertaken via online learning.

  • 25 credit points of Compulsory subjects
  • Between 25 and 50 credit points of Capstone subjects
  • Between 75 and 100 credit points of Elective subjects including

For students with an ESL background:

  • Between 62.5 and 100 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of ESL Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of Employability Elective subjects

For students without an ESL background:

  • Between 75 and 100 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of Employability Elective subjects.

100 point program (1 year full-time or part-time equivalent)

This is for relevant honours graduates or those who have completed at least two years professional work experience in a closely related field, in addition to relevant background study. It can be undertaken via online learning.

  • 25 credit points of Compulsory subjects
  • Between 25 and 50 credit points of Capstone subjects
  • Between 25 and 50 credit points of Elective subjects including

For students with an ESL background:

  • Between 12.5 and 50 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects
  • A maximum of 12.5 credit points of ESL Elective subjects

For students without an ESL background:

  • Between 25 and 50 credit points of Graduate Elective subjects

Specialisations

Students can choose from the following specialisations:

  • TESOL
  • Language Testing
  • English Language

Please note: Capstone subject options must be completed in the final hundred points of the program. All students are required to complete one of the two available Capstone options for the program (at least 25 points). This requirement cannot be waived or replaced in any circumstances.

Understanding credit points

A two-year program typically consists of 200 credit points.

A standard full-time study load is four subjects per semester, across two semesters per year (eight subjects per year), which equals 100 credit points per year.

Most subjects are worth 12.5 credit points*.

* Some subjects carry a heavier workload and may be worth more points.
