Game Design

Major overview

Overview

Game Design is where creativity, storytelling and technology collide. In this major, you’ll learn how to design interactive experiences, build immersive digital worlds and craft compelling gameplay narratives that connect with players on a deeper level.

You’ll explore what makes a great game- whether it’s a unique story, engaging mechanics or an unexpected twist and learn how to bring your own ideas to life. Through four scaffolded design studios, you’ll develop your skills in interface and game mechanics, narrative design, and digital world-building using industry-standard tools including Unreal Engine. Alongside these studios, you’ll study the history, theory and future of game design to better understand where the industry has come from and where you can take it next.

The Game Design major at Melbourne is designed to foster independent, creative game designers. We’re interested in students who want to shape the next generation of indie games and push the boundaries of interactive storytelling. You don’t need prior experience making games to get started- just imagination, curiosity and a love of play.

You’ll study within the Melbourne School of Design, surrounded by disciplines that shape the built and digital environments. From architecture to user experience and urban planning – you’ll develop a unique, cross-disciplinary foundation for designing digital worlds.
