Game Design

Overview

Your course structure

In your first year, you’ll build a foundation in design principles and digital design, exploring storytelling, digital communication, interactivity, and the mechanics of gameplay.

In your second year, you’ll undertake game design studios and core Bachelor of Design subjects, along with breadth and elective studies that expand your perspective and creative toolkit.

In your third year, you’ll complete 50 points (usually four subjects), including four “Punk Studios” that form the core of the major- each built around a thematic or environmental condition that challenges you to design a creative response. You’ll leave with a portfolio of four prototypes or “vertical slices” showcasing your skills and creative vision.

Double major options

You can combine Game Design with other design disciplines to broaden your expertise and career pathways. Popular double major options include:

  • Game Design + Graphic Design
  • Game Design + Interior Design
  • Game Design + Performance Design
  • Game Design + User Experience Design

Breadth studies

As part of the Melbourne curriculum, you’ll take up to 25% of your subjects outside your core studies. You might explore subjects in computer science, storytelling, media studies or business. This will help you develop skills that complement your design practice. Breadth allows you to connect ideas across disciplines and find inspiration in unexpected places- an essential quality for any great game designer.
