Single subject study applications

Simple steps to apply for single subject study under the Community Access Program (CAP).

Single subject study through the Community Access Program (CAP) is available to domestic students.

Other temporary Australian residents with a visa that permits study may apply. Overseas residents without an Australian visa can only apply for online subjects. International student visa holders and applicants are not eligible to enrol in single subjects.

Choose your single study subjects from the University Handbook. Each subject entry in our Handbook provides detailed information, including whether your chosen subjects are available for CAP study.

If the subject you have selected is available for single subject study, ‘Available through the Community Access Program’ will be stated in the Further Information section entry of the Handbook. If this section is not visible, the subject is not available for single subject study.

Once you have checked that the subject you'd like to study is available via CAP, you can find out teaching dates and available study periods in the ‘Dates and Times’ section of the Handbook.

This example shows where you will find the information you require for your application: subject name and code, location, level, available study periods (availability), and whether it is a quota subject.

Some subjects are offered in more than one study period and may be available in multiple course intakes. You will need to select the correct course intake and specify the study period within the application.

If the subject study period listed in the handbook does not exactly match one of the standard semester intakes, please make note of the teaching start date and use this to select the correct course intake as indicated in the table below.

Applications should not be submitted until the Handbook for the relevant year is published, as subjects may change from year to year. This is usually in the second week of November of the preceding year. Applications submitted prior to this will be placed on hold and assessed once the Handbook has been published.

Many single subjects have prerequisites. For more information on entry requirements and prerequisites, see the Handbook entry for your chosen subject.

Applications open once the Handbook is published in November; any applications submitted earlier will be placed on hold and assessed after publication. The closing dates above apply to standard study periods. You must also apply at least four weeks before teaching begins, or before any compulsory pre-reading period for your selected subjects (whichever is earlier).

Quota subjects

Some quota subjects may have earlier closing dates. Check the relevant subject entry in the University Handbook and ensure you meet all deadlines and requirements.

Enrolment and census dates

Make note of your subject’s enrolment deadline (last date to self-enrol) and census date. Late enrolment is not always possible, and you cannot change your enrolment from assessed to non-assessed after the census date. You are expected to read all Handbook information and plan your study accordingly.

Late applications

Late applications may be considered if there is enough time for processing and all required information and approvals are provided. However, there is no guarantee of an outcome. Applications that are incomplete or missing approvals cannot be processed.

Late applications for Summer subjects cannot be processed due to the University closure period. Current University of Melbourne students applying for Summer CAP subjects should apply before results are released, noting that offers may not be issued until after results are available.

You can apply to study single subjects in an assessed or non-assessed mode.

Applying for enabling study

If you're applying for enabling study, you'll need to specify you're seeking an ‘Enabling offer’ in your application (in the 'Purpose for Study' section). Your single study subjects must be CAP approved and completed in an assessed mode.

You'll need to provide the course name and code, or the website address that shows the subjects needed to meet your enabling study prerequisites.

Select the correct course code for each subject in your application using the table below. Codes are based on the subject level (undergraduate levels 1–4 or graduate levels 5–9) and study mode (assessed or non-assessed). If you plan to study both undergraduate and graduate subjects, you must submit a separate application for each level.

Applications for single subject study are completed online and are submitted directly to the University.

See information about your online application.

  • You must use the subject page in the University Handbook to help you complete your online application.
  • You will need to search for and apply for the relevant course code and indicate the subject you want to undertake within your application.
  • You will need to choose the study period you're applying for based on subject availability.
  • Enter all details about the subject you’re applying for (including the subject code and name). If you're applying for more than one subject, click 'Add answer' to enter more details. If you're applying for undergraduate and graduate subjects, you'll need to complete separate applications.
  • If you're applying for enabling study, you must clearly indicate you're seeking an ‘Enabling offer’ in the section 'Purpose for Study'.
  • Attach any secondary school results, academic transcripts or work experience details if required to satisfy requirements.
  • Check all details, agree to the terms and conditions and submit your application.

Single subject/Community Access Program (CAP) offers cannot be deferred.

If you decide to delay starting or need to take a break once you’ve enrolled, you’ll need to submit a new application when you’re ready to begin or return to study.

You can receive a full refund of your tuition fees if you withdraw from your single subject/CAP enrolment on or before the census date. Refunds aren’t available for any subjects after the census date.

To decline your offer for single subject study, follow the instructions in your offer letter.

To accept your offer, you'll need to follow the ‘how to accept this offer’ information in your offer email.

On the Get Started at Melbourne page, you can create a student account, apply for a student card, plan your study, enrol in subjects, find out about orientation and more.

Continuing single subject study

To complete further subjects in future intakes, you will need to submit a new online application for those subjects. You will be able to enrol in additional single subjects only after your new application has been assessed and a new offer has been issued.

Applications are submitted online. You’ll need to select your subject, choose assessed or non-assessed study where applicable, and provide any required documentation.

Applications open once the Handbook is published in November; any applications submitted earlier will be placed on hold and assessed after publication. Application dates vary by subject and study period. Check the application deadlines before applying, as late applications may not be accepted and some subjects have enrolment quotas.
