Meet Lorace Zhang: Master of Biomed Engineering graduate
Lorace (Tianshu) Zhang was an international student who studied a Bachelor of Biomedine, did Honours in Neuroscience and Anatomy then continued to graduate study with a Master of Biomedical Engineering and graduated with First Class Honours. Lorace now works as a Biomed ical Engineer and Data Analyst.
What was your research topic, and what sparked your interest in it?
Ophthalmology research, medical technologies, optical engineering, and data analysis. I became an entrepreneur after the BioDesign Innovation subject, offered by the university.
Why did you choose the University of Melbourne for your research?
The university is well regarded in Australia and globally for its academic achievements and connections, which have helped my research and career.
What are some challenges you’ve and how did you work through them?
I have been an entrepreneur in ophthalmology research and assistive technologies for five years. One of the biggest challenges in my career so far was discovering my interests and purpose, both for the area of study I chose and the area of work I am in right now. For me, the key was to try as many research areas/internship roles as possible.
How did you approach making friends and settling in - especially if you moved from overseas?
I joined the uni's Taekwondo club and made friends I still hang out with frequently today.
What advice would you give to other international students who are thinking about studying at UniMelb?
Make full use of what the uni has to offer, whether it is extracurricular activities, academic learning opportunities, or professional working/volunteering opportunities. And embrace the multicultural environment.
