Highlights of the Genetic Counselling experience

Expert academics

Throughout your studies, you'll be guided by world-renowned leaders and passionate experts in genetic counselling. These dedicated educators, including geneticists, genetic counsellors, and researchers, bring a wealth of specialisations, from genetic risk calculation to psychosocial support, ensuring you receive a comprehensive and cutting-edge education. You'll have the privilege of one-on-one teaching that truly sets this program apart.

Immersive learning

This program is all about hands-on experience and deep learning. You'll study in the University of Melbourne’s purpose-built Health Education and Learning Precinct at the Royal Children’s Hospital campus. This amazing setting gives you direct access to world-class clinical and research resources at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

Your two-year (full-time) or three-year (part-time) program includes lots of clinical experience. In your first year, you'll have clinic observations and a community placement, helping you understand how genetic conditions impact families. In your second year, you'll sharpen your counselling skills through placements in clinical genetics settings. You'll also work on an original research project and build a comprehensive professional portfolio to showcase your learning.

The strong connection between what you learn in class and what you'll do in your career is a huge benefit. Your assessments are designed to be relevant to the actual tasks you'll perform as a genetic counsellor, mirroring the skills needed for professional certification.

A Supportive Community

You won't be alone on this journey! You'll be part of a domestic and international community of peers. These strong relationships, along with the support from your coordinators, will help you confidently pursue your career anywhere in the world.
