Admission criteria
To be considered for entry into this course, you must:
- Have completed a bachelor degree (AQF7) in a cognate (relevant) discipine with a weighted average mark (WAM) of 75%, or equivalent, within the last 10 years.
Cognate (relevant) disciplines include: An Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited three-year undergraduate sequence in psychology.
The University of Melbourne is committed to maintaining a transparent admissions policy by clearly communicating all entry scores to prospective students. Entry requirements to the University of Melbourne are regularly reviewed to ensure they align with the University's Selection and Admissions Policy. The entry requirements published for this course will apply from the start year 2027 intake onwards.
Where degree levels are referenced, levels align with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Applications are assessed against these standards.
Where our admission criteria includes a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) and/or specific subject criteria, these are based on University of Melbourne grades and subjects. If you've studied elsewhere, we'll assess your relevant prior studies and equivalent grades. Your final WAM may be adjusted depending on your previous institution's accreditation, subject grading, and pass marks.
You can use our graduate coursework grade conversion eligibility calculator to get an indication of whether you are eligible for this course based on your previous studies and Weighted Average Mark (WAM).

Additional information
Weighted Average Marks (WAM)
In computing the weighted average, the entry score is calculated using a weighted average of second year (Level 2) and third year (Level 3) psychology subjects. The average of the third year Psychology subjects is assigned twice the weight of the average of the second year Psychology subjects.
Pass/fail grades will be excluded from the selection formula.
In the case that excluding pass/fail subjects from the selection formula leaves either the Level 2 or Level 3 terms in the formula empty, the entry score will be the non-empty term (i.e., average of eligible Level 2 subjects if no Level 3 marks are eligible for inclusion; average of eligible Level 3 subjects if no Level 2 marks are eligible for inclusion).
Due to the expected number of graduates, we are unable to provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) approval
Applicants who have obtained their qualifications outside of Australia are eligible to apply but must provide confirmation of completion of an Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) undergraduate sequence in Psychology, which can be requested from the Australian Psychological Society (APS), the national assessing authority in Australia for the assessment of academic qualifications in psychology.
Entry score adjustments
For applicants with results from the University of Melbourne for subjects undertaken in Semester 1, Winter Term and/or Semester 2, 2020 see MSPS Entry Score Adjustments.
