Admission criteria
To be considered for entry into this course, you must have:
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in any discipline with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65% (or equivalent), OR
- An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in any discipline AND one of the following graduate certificates from the University of Melbourne, with a WAM of at least 65% (or equivalent):
- Graduate Certificate in Health Economics and Economic Evaluation
- Graduate Certificate in Sexual Health
- Graduate Certificate in Gerontology
- Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Digital Health
- Graduate Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology
- Graduate Certificate in Public Health
- Graduate Certificate in Climate Change and Health.

Where our admission criteria includes a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) and/or specific subject criteria, these are based on University of Melbourne grades and subjects. If you've studied elsewhere, we'll assess your relevant prior studies and equivalent grades. Your final WAM may be adjusted depending on your previous institution's accreditation, subject grading, and pass marks.

English language requirements
All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM)
We encourage domestic students to explore eligibility for Graduate Access Melbourne (GAM). GAM offers an opportunity for admission to this course even if your tertiary marks are below the standard entry requirements. GAM applicants may also be considered for financial bursaries and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) where available.
GAM categories include coming from a rural area, being an Indigenous Australian, experiencing financial hardship or personal difficulties, having refugee status, or living with a disability or medical condition. In assessing applications, we look to balance opportunity and your capacity to succeed.
Advanced Standing
Prior studies may be credited towards your degree and potentially reduce the duration of your course. This is known as Advanced Standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning).
All applicants are automatically considered for Advanced Standing.
You may be eligible for up to 50 points of advanced standing if you have completed:
- A medical degree, OR
- An undergraduate degree in public health (or equivalent), OR
- An undergraduate degree AND at least two years of documented relevant full-time work experience in a public health or professional healthcare setting, OR
- A master’s degree (research or coursework) or PhD in health or public health. OR
- One of the following Graduate Certificates at the University of Melbourne:
- Graduate Certificate in Health Economics and Economic Evaluation
- Graduate Certificate in Sexual Health
- Graduate Certificate in Gerontology
- Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Digital Health
- Graduate Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology
- Graduate Certificate in Public Health
- Graduate Certificate in Climate Change and Health.
You may be eligible for up to 100 points of advanced standing if you:
- Are MBBS/MD qualified and are a Medical Specialist Fellow of Australia, AND have current registration with AHPRA (or equivalent), approved by the Fellowship-awarding Faculty, OR
- Have an executive level (or equivalent) role in health within government or the health service sector AND at least five years of full-time health sector experience.
If you meet these criteria, you would be required to complete four core subjects (excluding Foundations of Public Health and Public Health Leadership and Management), two electives of your choice from the Master of Public Health electives, and a 25-point capstone option.
Current Doctor of Medicine students
If you are enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Melbourne, you may be permitted to enrol in the Master of Public Health at the University of Melbourne after the completion of the third year of the MD. You may receive 50 points of advanced standing including:
- 31.25 points unspecified credit into the Master of Public Health
- 12.5 specific credit against the CORE subject POPH90217 Foundations of Public Health OR the CORE subject POPH90218 Public Health Leadership and Management)
- 6.25 points unspecified credit for completion of a Trainee Internship in Population Health during the final year of the MD.
This pathway is not available to students who have already completed the Doctor of Medicine and quotas may be applied to both CSP and fee-based enrolments.
Current Master of Public Health students
If you are enrolled in your first year of the Master of Public Health at the University of Melbourne and have been successful in gaining entry to the Doctor of Medicine (MD), you are eligible for entry to the MD-MPH Intercalated degree, providing you have completed POPH90217 Foundations of Public Health, POPH90013 Biostatistics, POPH90014 Epidemiology 1, POPH90231 Qualitative Research in Public Health, POPH90274 Prioritising & Planning Public Health AND five elective subjects.
Master of Public Health students who study part-time and successfully undertake the requisite ten subjects over a period exceeding a year and enter the Doctor of Medicine subsequently will also be considered eligible for the MPH (MD).
You will receive specified credit against the core subject POPH90218 Public Health Leadership and Management.
If you have completed only eight subjects prior to entering the MD, you will then be required to complete an additional two elective subjects from the MPH during your MD studies.
