Overview
The Architecture major teaches students how to think like a designer.
Architects design the places in which we live, work and play. In this major you’ll develop a key set of skills, learning in a step-by-step way to solve problems, imagine ideas, try them out and improve them. From big civic spaces where crowds come together to intimate places for rest and respite. You’ll use creativity, problem solving and care to imagine new futures for the built environment that respond to big issues like climate change, growing cities, social fairness, Indigenous cultures, health and wellbeing, and new digital tools.
The spine of the architecture major is the design studio. These are small group classes in which students create and develop their designs under the supervision of a studio leader. Studios mirror the conditions of working in practice and allow students to gain confidence and skills in a collaborative environment.
Studio learning is supported by a sequence of subjects that that help students develop critical knowledge in the history and theory of design, visual representation skills and building technologies.
Careers and Further Study
This major is the first step toward registration as an architect. Graduates progress into the accredited Master of Architecture, or take their design skills into practice across a broad range of design disciplines.
