Single subject study fees and payments

The cost of single subject study varies depending on the type of study you're undertaking (enabling, bridging, CAP assessed, or CAP non-assessed), the subjects you choose, and the credit point value of each subject. Find out how to calculate your fees and the payment methods available.

When you study single subjects, you'll pay a tuition fee for each subject you enrol in. Different fees may apply depending on whether you're studying in enabling, bridging, CAP assessed, or CAP non-assessed mode.

How fees are calculated

Every subject at the University of Melbourne has been assigned a discipline fee band and a credit point value. The subject fees are set within a fixed number of bands, based on the Australian Government’s discipline classification of the subject.

Your fees are calculated based on:

  • The credit point value of the subjects you take in each semester
  • The discipline fee band of each subject
  • The level of study for each subject (undergraduate or graduate)
  • The mode you're studying in (enabling, bridging, CAP assessed, or CAP non-assessed).

The amount charged is the sum of the fees for all subjects in which you enrol. Tuition fees are charged for every study period in which you're enrolled.

You’re required to pay your tuition fees to maintain your enrolment by the payment due date specified on your student invoice. Invoices can be found in your Student portal.

Terms and conditions

It's important you read the Community Access Program (CAP) tuition fees terms and conditions and Student Loans, Fees and Charges Policy (MPF1325). Once you enrol, you'll be bound by our fee policies and terms and conditions.

The current year's fee bands are shown under 'Single subject study fees' in Tuition fee tables for Australian fee-paying students.

The tables include both assessed and non-assessed fee information. Fees shown are for 100 credit points (1 EFSTL/1 year) of study. Most single subjects are 12.5 credit points.

CAP non-assessed subject fees are less than CAP assessed subject fees. Studying in non-assessed mode means you don’t complete exams or tests as part of your subject.

You cannot use non-assessed study as enabling study or to gain credit (advanced standing) later.

If you're enrolled in a single subject in non-assessed mode, you still need to pay your fees upfront by the due date on your student invoice and cannot defer payment.

Students undertaking study in CAP assessed mode pay a different subject fee than those undertaking study in non-assessed mode.

All tuition fees must be paid upfront, usually before you commence study.

Tuition fees for single subject study under the Community Access Program (both assessed and non-assessed mode) can't be deferred through an Australian Government Higher Education Loan Program, such as FEE-HELP.

Go to Understanding your fees to find individual subject fees for Community Access Program subjects in assessed mode.

Fees for enabling studies

Australian citizens and humanitarian visa holder students undertaking single subject study as enabling study may be eligible to defer their tuition fees using the Australian Government’s Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), FEE-HELP.

Fees for bridging studies

Domestic students undertaking an approved bridging program for overseas-trained professionals may be eligible for FEE-HELP. See Study Assist for eligibility details.

Fees must be paid by the relevant payment deadline for your subject. Payment due dates are provided on your Statement of Liability (also called a Student Invoice) once you enrol.

Your Statement of Liability lists the most up-to-date details of your fees owing, payment due dates and payment options for the full calendar year. It is updated whenever you change your enrolment and can be used as an invoice for fee payment. You can download your Statement of Liability from your Student portal at any time.

Fee discounts are not available if you're undertaking single subject study as enabling or bridging study.

You don't need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) for single subject study in the Community Access Program.

You may need to factor in additional expenses associated with your subject, including the cost of textbooks, equipment, technology, resources for special projects and excursions. Outside of study costs, you may also like to budget for social activities, sports or club memberships.

Subject fees depend on how you enrol (enabling, bridging, CAP assessed, or CAP non-assessed), the subject’s discipline, and its credit point value.

Single subject study isn’t offered as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). Fees are charged on a full-fee basis and need to be paid upfront.

Your fee payment deadlines are outlined in your Statement of Liability, which becomes available after you enrol. This document includes a summary of your current fees, due dates and available payment methods and is updated if you make changes to your enrolment. You can access and download it at any time through my.unimelb.

Fee deferrals and payment plans aren’t available for single subject study. Full payment is required by the due date.

You’re eligible for a full refund if you withdraw by the census date. Refunds aren’t available after the census date.
