How the Melbourne curriculum structure opens doors to opportunity

International student Remco is currently studying the Bachelor of Commerce with majors in Economics and Finance as well as a concurrent Diploma in Computing.

Perhaps it was inevitable, when it came time to weighing up his university options, that Remco Holstege looked abroad. Born in Indonesia, Remco spent much of his childhood in Bahrain before relocating once more to the Netherlands. What prompted him to set his sights specifically on the University of Melbourne was the structure and flexibility of the curriculum.

As Remco admits, his interests have always been very broad – and so the opportunity to study areas outside his core discipline was of great appeal. Breadth subjects form a core part of the Melbourne curriculum, and allow students to explore diverse interests in parallel and contrasting areas of study. Not only does this cross-disciplinary exposure broaden one’s expertise and skillset, but it opens doors to more opportunities upon graduation, in different careers and industries.  

At Melbourne, undergraduate students can also study an extra qualification alongside their degree, via a concurrent diploma. Remco, in addition to his Bachelor of Commerce, is studying the Diploma in Computing to enhance his knowledge of IT and communications, but also to complement his expertise in finance and economics and position himself as a highly employable graduate.
