Undergraduate applications (domestic)

To apply for undergraduate study at the University of Melbourne as a domestic student, lodge your application directly with Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Read the guide below about applying for undergraduate study.

VTAC important dates

Start year intake (Semester 1/February)

VTAC applications open in early August for the start year (Semester 1/ February) intake for the following year. Start year is the main intake for most courses:

  • Application open early August
  • Applications close end of September for timely applications, end of October for late applications and early December for very late applications
  • Offers are released in rounds between December–February

Undergraduate applications that require supplementary tasks—such as auditions or interviews for Fine Arts and Music degrees—must be submitted earlier. The deadline for these supplementary tasks aligns with the VTAC timely application closing date at the end of September each year.

Refer to the VTAC website for important dates.

Mid-year intake (Semester 2/July)

Some undergraduate degrees offer mid-year entry, subject to availability. The application process and turnaround times for mid-year intake can be tighter than start year, so it's important to check VTAC's application deadlines.

  • Applications usually open in April
  • Applications close in June
  • Offers are released late June–July.

Refer to the VTAC website for important dates.

All applicants must meet the academic entry requirements, including subject prerequisites and English language requirements of their chosen course/s. Check the entry requirements on the course page.

You should apply as a domestic student if you're an Australian or New Zealand citizen (including dual citizens), a permanent resident of Australia, or hold a permanent humanitarian or Pacific Engagement visa.

Australian and New Zealand students who have completed their secondary studies interstate or overseas are still considered domestic applicants and apply through VTAC for either start year or mid-year intake. See domestic students studying overseas for more information.

Access Melbourne is the University's special consideration and equity entry scheme that takes your personal circumstances into account when you apply to study with us through VTAC. It's designed to increase opportunities for students of all backgrounds to access and thrive at university.

Check your eligibility for Access Melbourne.

To be considered for Access Melbourne, submit an equity schemes and scholarship application (formerly SEAS) in VTAC alongside your course preferences.

If you’d like to transfer into an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne, the process depends on where you’re currently studying.

Transferring from another university or institution

Apply through VTAC alongside all other applicants. Your application will be assessed based on your completed study and any relevant academic results. You may also be eligible for advanced standing (credit for prior study).

Transferring between University of Melbourne undergraduate courses

If you’re already studying an undergraduate degree with us, submit an internal course transfer application instead of applying through VTAC. Learn more about internal course transfers and how to apply.

All domestic students, including Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) students studying outside of Victoria or overseas, apply through VTAC.

  • Once VTAC applications open for the next intake, you can apply for up to eight undergraduate courses or Graduate Degree Packages – it's important to list each course in order of your preference.
  • To be considered for Access Melbourne, submit an equity schemes and scholarship application in VTAC alongside your course preferences.
  • In some cases, you may need to submit evidence of your results to VTAC. VTAC will notify you if additional information is required.
  • If you don't receive your final results before the VTAC application deadline, you can still complete your application. When your final results are available, you'll need to provide them to be eligible for an offer.
  • You can change your course preferences during the change of preference period. See VTAC for instructions.
  • If you haven't met the subject prerequisite(s) for your course with an approved Australian or overseas Year 12 subject or equivalent, you'll need to include a syllabus or detailed subject outline with your VTAC application.

You can apply for select undergraduate courses in the mid-year (Semester 2/July) intake through VTAC. Not all courses offer mid-year entry. Entry requirements and selection criteria are the same for both intakes.

Current University of Melbourne students wishing to apply for an internal transfer mid-year should submit an undergraduate course transfer application.

The application process is the same as the start year intake, with some important differences:

  • Not all courses offer mid-year entry – check the course page for availability
  • Mid-year applications are assessed through the VTAC mid-year selection rounds
  • Application and change of preference timelines at mid-year are shorter, so it’s important to monitor key dates on the VTAC website.

If you’re considering a mid-year start, refer to your course page for the most up-to-date entry information and availability.

If your application is successful, you'll receive an official email offer from the University of Melbourne, and the offer will be visible in your VTAC account.

If you're offered a place, you can choose to accept, defer or decline.

When you lodge your application through VTAC, you'll automatically be considered for many of our scholarship opportunities, including the Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship.

If you've lodged an equity schemes and scholarships application through VTAC, you’ll automatically be considered for the Narrm Scholarship, as well as a range of faculty equity scholarships to help with your tuition and living costs.

You may also be eligible for scholarships that require a separate application. Find opportunities on the Scholarships website.

If you're planning to move to Melbourne for your undergraduate studies, check if you're eligible for a place through University Accommodation, which offers student beds in partner accommodation close to campus. University Accommodation applications open in August and as a new student, you can apply before receiving a course offer.

There are other options such as residential colleges, student apartments, share houses, homestays and temporary accommodation. Residential college applications open around April for the following year's start year intake.

You should submit your application by the relevant VTAC deadline. Key dates vary depending on your applicant type and whether you are applying for a start year or mid-year intake.

VTAC allows you to list up to eight course preferences. You should order them based on your genuine course preferences, not on how likely you think you are to receive an offer.

Yes. You can update your course preferences in VTAC up until the change of preference deadline. Only your latest preferences will be considered during selection.

Most Year 12 results are provided automatically through VTAC. You may need to submit additional documentation if you are applying for special consideration, pathways or courses with selection tasks.
