What about other costs?

Research Training Program (RTP)

Most domestic graduate research students are offered a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship, which is funded by the Australian Government. If you are enrolled under the RTP you are exempt from tuition fees for the normal duration of your course. This exemption is valid for up to four years for students enrolled in a doctoral program and up to two years for a research masters degree. RTP-funded places are available to Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand Citizens accepted into the Doctor of Philosophy, Masters of Philosophy, doctorates by research or masters by research.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

If you are enrolled in a Research Training Program (RTP), you will be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which in 2018 was $298 for full-time students and $223 for part-time students. SA-HELP, a government funded loan scheme, is available to help eligible students pay all or part of their SSAF. The University's Student Financial Aid Service can provide you with advice and information on: Student loans and bursaries/grants, Government student assistance, including Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance, cost of living advice, budgeting and tax advice. Link


Available to high achieving students undertaking graduate research at the University of Melbourne.

All applicants made an offer of a place in a graduate research program will receive a AUD$30,000 per year living stipend (full-time only) and waived tuition fees for up to 5 years.

Scholarship Selection and Assessment

All applicants to the Faculty's graduate research programs are automatically considered for a Faculty-allocated scholarship and fee remission on applying for the program.

Top up funding

Top up funding of AUD$10,000 is available for research, experiments and conferences during the research phase of the program.
